GOOSE PROBLEM? NO PROBLEM!
* How do I choose the right Goose Dog for my needs?
THE RIGHT DOG
FOR YOU
Many factors go into determining which dog is best for your needs
and situation. When you call us about purchasing a trained goose dog, you
should be ready to answer the following questions as the first step toward
finding the perfect dog for you and your situation:
- How large a property
or area are you trying to clear of problem birds or wildlife?
- What type
of birds or animals will the dog be required to work?
- Will swimming be
required? How much and how often?
- Will the dog be working for one handler
or multiple handlers? What is the prospective handler's experience and
temperament? Is personnel likely to change over during the dog's working
lifetime?
- How and where will the dog be housed? Some dogs have more need
for companionship and bonding than others.
- Will the dog be in regular
contact with the public? Will this include children? Other dogs? Livestock?
- What other conditions unique to your property should we know about?
Noise? Highways? Nearby distractions? Seclusival has a wide selection of
Border Collies in all ages and stages of training. Let us use our 20 plus

- What should a well trained goose dog be able to do?
TRAINED
GOOSE DOGS Nearly every Border Collie will chase geese, but few
meet the specialized requirements for a career as a successful goose dog.
What should a well trained goose dog be able to do? A well trained goose
dog is the product careful selection followed by months of highly skilled
training. Here are just a few of the basics.
A goose dog works at a distance
from the handler, typically in unfenced areas. Solid, well-proofed obedience
training is a must!
Like a sheepdog, a goose dog needs voice or whistle
commands to direct it right, left, farther out -- wherever the geese are!
Beyond basic sheepdog training, a goose dog must be willing to swim out
after the birds, and must take direction in the water. Attitude is important!
A goose dog must not be intimidated by angry or aggressive geese, and at
the same time should seek to herd, not harm them.
More specialized skills
for goose dogs include riding on golf carts, greeting the public appropriately,
ignoring noise or livestock, and other needs peculiar to individual sites.
If you are looking for the perfect Border Collie for goose management,
sheepdog trials or farm work, we have a selection of quality dogs at various
ages and levels of training -- from just-started one year olds to mature,
experienced stock, trial or goose control dogs. In general, an older dog
with more advanced training is more settled and will find it easier to
make a smooth transition to your routines. Such a dog is, of course, pricier
than a younger dog, but is well worth the extra cost.
