ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY GOOSE CONTROL

Fifty years ago, the Canada Goose was nearing extinction due to loss of habitat and excessive hunting pressure.  Concerted action by environmentalists has successfully restored the population of these beautiful birds.  Unfortunately goose droppings (each goose produces 1.5 pounds of droppings per day) and aggression from nesting geese raise safety and health issues for golf courses and parks.  Geese are also hazardous at airports, where geese occupy runways and may collide with aircraft in the air or on the ground. There is an urgent need to deal with these problems in ways which encourage the geese to move elsewhere without harming them.

Specially trained Border Collies offer an environmentally sensitive way to manage problem geese. Their instinct is to herd, not hurt.  Once taught to focus this inborn herding drive on Canada geese rather than sheep, these highly intelligent and trainable dogs police problem geese with an enthusiasm and diligence which quickly persuades the most stubborn goose that life would be more peaceful somewhere else.

A high quality goose-control dog is the most humane and effective way of dealing with Canada goose management issues.  Many sites report public relations benefits as well.   Parks, airfields, and golf courses which employ Border Collies for Canada Goose management justly earn reputations for being conscientious and environmentally concerned.  Local newspapers and industry newsletters are eager to write feature articles on this novel method of dealing with problem geese.  Thus a specially trained Border Collie goose control dog is an opportunity for positive public relations.

BORDER COLLIES FOR GOOSE CONTROL

A high quality goose-control dog is the most humane and effective way of dealing with problem Canada geese.

Training Border Collies as  goose control dogs is an art. Prospects are chosen for a combination of herding instinct, trainability, and ability to adapt to demands never imagined by their forebears on the Scottish Highlands.

A good goose dog must  be able to pressure the geese without harming them,  pursue them into water as necessary,  read the geese's minds, anticipate their responses intelligently, and respond to a range of handler commands and signals.  A goose-dog must also ride happily in golf carts, ignore nearby traffic noises, stay within the boundaries of the golf course, and relate to the public in a friendly but not overly-enthusiastic way.  In addition, each situation makes unique demands which must be met by additional training and expert selection of the most appropriate individual dog.

INVESTIGATE BEFORE YOU INVEST!

*  What are the credentials of the trainer?

* Precisely what does the dog know how to do?

 * Is there a selection of dogs available to be matched to your needs?

* What is the procedure for acclimating the dog to its new surroundings, and training the personnel who will be working with the dog?

* Is follow-up training available for fine-tuning and brush-ups?

* Can you expect ongoing support from the trainer?

*  Will the trainer remain on the scene for the lifetime of the dog you have purchased?
